Red
by Charissa Pereira
Red hot peppers burning your tongue as you reach for the white milk carton Red sunburns itching to be scratched by pointy pink nails giving off heat Red wine colored tongues twisting truths to impress her in that low cut navy dress Red flushed cheeks you had beneath startled green eyes when I said your aunt told me that you told her that you think I’m the one Red pantsuit at the black-tie event because she doesn’t care what anyone thinks but still wants all the attention from the men that never notice Red meat on the grill with trails of gray smoke taking over the backyard and bringing saliva to our ravenous tongues Red blood spilled from vials splattered on the ivory floor on the way into surgery Red horizontal lines of ink running through your misspelled words on the essay you wrote with your favorite blue pen you thought was lucky Red lips tonight to steal attention from my brown eyes that could cry at any minute Red hands bruised from holding too tightly to the young children who just want to run freely in the lavender fields
