Play for Keeps
Honeysuckle spring rain,
gather in the trees.
Rid my lungs of bitterness,
soak them in the breeze.
Slide beneath my shoulder blades,
hide between our memories,
and overtake the after taste
of losing everything.
Finish falling off the morning,
flood the dirt below my feet.
Muddy up the way home,
slip through the endless green.
Hold me in old promises,
all the days we’ll never see,
and chase away what could’ve been
if you had stayed with me.
Splinter the secret settling,
crawl back from underneath.
Pour out what’s left wanting,
give desire room to breathe.
Tip your face towards noon day,
allow the brush of heat,
and embrace the open burning
of knowing what you need.
Give in to the way down,
drag slow the aching things.
Recall the cost of gentleness,
bear the weight of your beliefs.
Watch daylight's disappearance,
hear how the night still weeps,
and wait for it to start again,
the chance to play for keeps.
xoxo,
Corinne
